Postcard from Borneo

A whirlwind journey across the mysterious island of Borneo.

On arrival, it was obvious the mysterious little island was deep in the grips of an MTV promoted tsunami appeal. Billboards, flags and posters covered Sabah's capital of Kota Kinabalu, with Asian stars appealing for donations and, by all accounts, locals replying feverishly. In Asia, the MTV experience was a pleasant one compared to what I grew up with. There were two good reasons for this; it rarely screened in Australia, and when it did, Richard Wilkins was the host.

The Kill Devil Hills’ confident and brooding debut album.

The café is quiet now. The late afternoon rush has all but dissipated leaving empty chairs and tables scattered with half eaten cake and coffee glasses. The service is slow so I close my eyes and plug in the headphones. The first strains of Heathen Songs come as the waitress returns to collect the remaining glasses; its sounds like the clinking of spurs.

Kilimanjaro - The Mountain of God

Herding us like a flock of mountain goats, Auguste urges us forward with a smile that could melt the ice off Kilimanjaro. Tall and gaunt, he is wise to the happenings of the mountain and a touch older than our porters, who have long since disappeared with the baggage.
